On the way to the gala as I sat in the back of the limousine I had hired to take me, I thought about what had just happened. Who really has the power in this relationship? Me, the boss, who owns the company and could fire the ass of that blond cock tease? Or that blond cock tease, who knew how to push every button I have till I had to physically push him away before we went too far? And what did he really want from me anyway? As far as I knew, he was doing fine in the company. He didn’t need my influence to advance his career.
Gervais Bachman was at my table at the gala. Several times during the evening, I had thought about talking to him about what had happened with Caleb, if only to get my side of the story out early, should Caleb start lying about our encounter. In the end, I kept my mouth shut. I didn’t want Caleb to get in trouble with his department—I promised him that he wouldn’t. And hell, no one’s gonna fire me if some version or other of what happened got out to the company. I might have some explaining to do, and I would do it if it came to that.

I stepped into his office to see what was going on:

I stepped into his office to see what was going on:
“Hiring again?”
“Yep. That Caleb guy of yours left us last week.”“He’s not my Caleb guy, Gerv. But did he says why he left? I thought he was doing pretty well in the company.”“Yeah, he said he needed to find a new job because of our policy about office romances. I sent glowing references to Blow, Maicock & Howe, the big publishing firm, so he may be working for them now.“
“So who’s the lucky guy he left the company for?” Gerv gave me a strange look, and I immediately regretted asking the question. I quickly backtracked, “Stupid question! As if it matters!”Gerv shrugged and replied, “He didn’t say, and I didn’t ask.”
